My Christmas Story

So I've been busy writing (39000 at present), and doing the Christmas shopping thing (mostly online, but there's been a trip or two to the thrift shop in search of scraps of stuff). We're decorating today. I'll bake this afternoon. We prepared the boys for a more modest Christmas this year, and they took it in stride. However I still managed to find one requested item each, which was more than I expected to find. They've been given orders to make things for one another. Sam immediately got into the spirit of this (but, then, Sam is the one who's kept track of other people's birthdays since he was five). The other three are a little harder to inspire, but they're getting with it.

All in all, it's shaping into a good holiday. The boys are all growing older so there's not so much of that little kid anticipation going on and I kind of miss that. Okay, I miss that a lot. I miss Santa Claus. There. I've said it.

(I do believe . . . I do believe . . . I do believe . . .)

You might remember two years ago when Gary broke the news to Sam that there was no Santa and we found out that he'd actually been shielding us from the truth for quite some time. This is probably one of the best examples of the kind of person he is. Sometimes I wonder though, what he's missing out on being such an organized, logical thinker.

A real life conversation with my eleven year old:

Me: Sam, they're having a Christmas Parade in Cassville tonight and Daniel and Jeremiah are going, do you want to go too?

Sam: Let me think about it.

(Later)

Me: So do you want to go or not?

Sam: Nahh.

Me (surprised): Why not?

Sam: I guess I just don't see the point.

Me: What?

Sam: The point of standing out in the cold and the dark and watching a bunch people and stuff go by.

Me: Uhh. Because it's fun?

Sam: It doesn't sound like fun. It sounds cold. And kind of boring.

Dear Lord, what have I done?

LOL I'm with Sam on that! I'll stay home and watch that on tv. :]

The kids laughed long and hard at me over Thanksgiving, at how long Cara was encouraged to believe in Santa. It's just hard to give up that last little bit of magic, isn't it?

There's no Santa? Really? I refuse to accept that.

If you don't beleive you don't receive...

What a delightfully pragmatic young man. He is pre-disposed towards success -- you know that, right?

Thanks everybody. :)

Sam wasn't even terribly interested in the one on TV. He did have a lot of questions about the make up of the helium in the balloons though.

Debby--It's nice to hear that we aren't the only parents who did this.

RH--I completely agree.

Ray Veen--He is all of that. And I suspect he's going succeed at anything he puts his mind to.

Ah, that Sam! My kind of thinking! Sign of a good mind in that boy.
