The vet put Joy to sleep yesterday morning after determining she was in major kidney failure. She believed the cause was anti-freeze poisoning which was why she was probably out in the woods in the first place. The vet believed that the former owner gave it to her, but my husband is a little more forgiving and his suspicion was whoever dumped her probably only knew they had a sick puppy and didn't want to deal with it. Either way, our family and Joy paid the price.
I have so many angry and sad thoughts on this, but am too drained to rant.

I'm so sorry Mary... for the pup, your family, Daniel (how is he?)...
wish this could have turned out differently.
I think Joy would say "Thank You" for the time and care, the love that she received; and also especially for the more gentle passing.
Stay "soft" ~ the world needs more "softies".
Oh, Mary. I'm so sorry.
People can be so cruel. I hope your son is handling this as well as could be expected. I know how quickly I can become attached to the right animal.
I wish I could do more than say I'm thinking of you.
Aaaaaaaawwww, so sorry to hear that, Mary, that just sucks.
Hugs and kind wished coming at ya from across the water.
:-(
So sorry to hear that, Mary. At least Joy found a good family before he died, and went knowing that he was loved. I'll be praying for you in your grief. xxx
Thanks everyone. I deeply appreciate it.
Anon-Daniel is at camp and will find out tomorrow. His Dad is driving up to pick him up in the morning--he wants to do this by himself.
Hugs are always welcome, Scotty, but especially at the moment.

Mary, sorry to hear the sad news.
Take care.
Sometimes kindness hurts, but it's still the right thing to do.
Thank you Autumn and Dennis.
